Canoeing a hit with Stella Maris students

Stella Maris College has teamed up with the Malta Canoe Racing Club (MCRC), offering their students a chance to practice kayaking as an alternative form of physical education.

In September 2009, the MCRC commenced their train the trainer’s courses for school teachers, certifying them as placid water coaches. The course covered basic paddling technique as well as many safety issues which are related to the sport. Teachers also had to become comfortable in their kayaks and learnt how to rescue a capsized paddler. The course allows teachers to take students on the water; however they would be confined to the safe waters of the marina.

Currently, a series of taster sessions are being conducted by the Stella Maris coaches in order to cope with the high demand from eager students who would like to give the sport a shot. Weekly sessions are anticipated to commence in the second half of 2010.

The Malta Canoe Federation (MCF) will once again be kicking off the kayak season with its annual event, the Manoel Island Race, to be held near the Zodiak Kiosk, Sliema.

Registration will start at 8.30 a.m., followed by short briefing, with races starting at 9 a.m.

There will be four main races:

  • 10Km open race consisting of three laps, starting at 9am
  • 3Km open race
  • 200m sprint seniors’ sprint
  • 200m juniors’ sprint

The event is not limited to frequent paddlers and kayak owners; beginners also view this race as an ideal opportunity for a first competitive taste of kayak racing.

Besides, the Manoel Island Race has attracted increased international interest in recent years, with participants from Italy and Germany providing good competition for local athletes. It is anticipated that this year's event will see the participation of clubs from Sicily as well as other European countries.

There are a limited number of kayaks available for those who do not have their own equipment. Those interested in using the club equipment are asked to register by April 2nd to reserve a canoe. Race rules are available on request.
